In 1938, the Treasury Department announced a competition for designs to replace the Indian Head Buffalo Nickel. The winning design, submitted by the German-American sculptor Felix Schlag, featured a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson dressed in period clothing and wearing a peruke wig. First introduced by the United States Mint in November 1938, the Jefferson Nickel has honored America´s third president for more than six decades. In 2004, this classic nickel design was replaced by two new designs commemorating the Louisiana Purchase and the Expedition of Lewis and Clark. This unique medallion features a genuine 2003 Jefferson Nickel minted by the United States Mint and plated in sparkling 14k gold.
